Today we have some tips for you to help them build great dental care habits from the start. You can truly set your child up to have a healthy, beautiful smile for the rest of their life … start now! Follow these six simple tips to get your child interested in building great dental habits for life.

Please feel free to contact any one of our three convenient locations in Frederick, Hagerstown, or Ellicott City if you have any questions or concerns. We love taking care of families and would be happy to help you with whatever problem you may be facing!

    Tip #1: Start Young

To build great oral health care habits, you should start your child out as young as possible. This means that as soon as they have teeth to care for, they should be learning how to care for them! Stressing the importance of great dental health from a very young age can make a huge difference later down the road.

If your child is older and you haven’t started this, don’t worry! It is not too late! Start now. Help your child build the habits they need to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for life.

Tip #2: Be A Good Role Model

Are you being a great role model for your kids? We suggest brushing with them every morning and night! This will help show your kids what great dental habits look like! It is also a good bonding time for you and your children … you can teach them proper techniques and tell them how great a job they are doing. This is a wonderful opportunity to invest in the health of your child.

Tip #3: Let Them Choose Their Products

Do your kids choose their own dental health care products? We recommend taking your child to the store with you to purchase their toothbrush and toothpaste. There are tons of kid-friendly designs and flavors to choose from. This might help them get excited about caring for their smile. Best of all, it allows them to take ownership of their dental health … and that kind of attitude is what will help them stay healthy for life.

Tip #4: Use These Cool Apps

Still having trouble getting them interested? There are a few great phone apps you can use to capture your child’s attention and help them state involved in their dental health. All of these apps are available for both Android and iPhone devices.

    • Brush DJ
    • Disney Magic Timer
    • Aqua fresh Brush Time
    • Chomper Chums

    Tip #5: Reward Good Behavior

Are you rewarding good behavior? Showing your child that a healthy smile can lead to great things is a great way to help your child stay motivated with their dental care habits. We recommend maybe allowing them to stay up an extra 30 minutes every night they brush their teeth. You could also give them stickers to collect and a bigger prize when they reach a certain amount of stickers. Kids love to know when they are doing something right … help your child understand the importance of dental health by rewarding their great habits!

Tip #6: Schedule Regular Dental Visits

One last great thing you can do to help your child build great long-term dental habits is by scheduling them in to see our team at least twice a year. At these checkup visits, we will look for any signs of problems and solve them right away. We can also talk to you and your child about proper hygiene techniques and nutritional information. This will also help your child avoid dental phobia in the future by showing them that visits to the dentist are easy. Please reach out to our team to book your visit today.
